Chargers face with four major injuries and loses at Santa Ana 2-0

Horn suffers concussion
in a 2-0 loss to Santa Ana
Santa Ana, CA - The Charger Men's Soccer team is still looking for the formula on how to beat Santa Ana in its backyard. On odd years at Santa Ana, the Chargers find a way to tie the Dons: 2-2 in 2011, 0-0 in 2009 and 1-1 in 2007.  Last season, the Chargers had led twice only to see Santa Ana stormed back in the 80-minute mark to score on rebound to tie the game.  This time the Dons ensure that they preserve a victory. Why not, it is an even year after all. The Dons lead 2-0 at the half which eventually becomes the final score. The Chargers have opportunities but unable to cash them in.

Losing the game to Santa Ana is bad enough, but the Chargers face worse things today when Sergio Balbuena breaks his leg and likely out for the season. Chris Berkley has potential broken ribs. Lasse horn has a concussion. Brock Gustafson injures his ankle. All key players and contributors to the success of the team thus far.

Coach Ed Kephart is left with puzzles which he has to find a quick solution before the team host Fullerton on October 2.

Chargers bank on defense in victory over IVC 3-0

Defender Michael McKay
has 3 saves
Cypress, CA - The Chargers (4-1-3, 1-0) play perhaps the best soccer this season in defeating Irvine Valley (3-3-2, 0-1) in the conference home opener 3-0.  Cypress defeat IVC with solid defense: GK Tony Roman has 11 saves, Midfielder Luis Garcia has 2 saves and Defender Michael McKay has 3 saves and some key defensive clears. The defense frustrates IVC from the start as the lasers have to adjust their offense to make long shots.

Pedro Santos gets the Chargers on the board first by finding the net from 10 yards out from Brock Gustafson's pass to the middle at the 57th minute. It turns out that is all what the Chargers need for a victory, however at the 64th minute Midfielder Brandon Lemucchi slap shoots from 35 yards out to burn the net and gives the Chargers a 2-0 advantage. Cypress is not done with business as Forward Milan Engholm finds his way inside the penalty box and slaps the ball into the net unassisted at the 89th minute.

The Chargers travel to Santa Ana on September 28.

Chargers tie after a game marred with yellow cards

Royce Martinez
attacks in the first half.
Cypress, CA - In a game which the Chargers (3-1-3) are assessed 14 fouls and 6 yellow cards, score their own goal, must feel fortunate to come away with a tie. Cypress ties Southwestern (5-1-1) 2-2 in a game that loses composure in the early going.  Southwestern has its share of 8 fouls and 4 yellow cards.

Southwestern comes into the game with a high confidence after outscoring 6 opponents 23-6 and 3 of those are shutouts.  Cypress is playing without its key players Pedro Santos, Christian Obreshkov, Ryan Jara due to injuries, but what it really misses is the leadership of Brett Mackay who is likely to be done with the season after an ankle injury at Cuyamaca. Abdullah Qasi is activated from academic eligibility and contributes with confidence on the offense.  Southwestern gets on the board first with a goal from Sergio Villalva, but Charger Sweeper Sebastian Calderon finds the net at the 36-minute mark to tie the game.

Entering the second half, Southwestern is awarded a corner kick only that Michael McKay mistakenly taps the ball into his own net to allow Southwestern a 2-1 lead. Later on, McKay makes it up by saving a goal from a Southwestern corner kick.  At the 49th minute, Milan Engholm is being fouled inside the penalty box and the Chargers are given a PK which Chris Berkley slaps it into the net to tie the game 2-2.

The Chargers open conference play against Irvine Valley on September 25.

Chargers suffer first loss of the season

Cypress, CA - The Chargers (3-1-2) host Chaffey (4-2-1) on an afternoon when the temperature almost reaches 100 degrees. A couple of EZ-Ups must be set up over the Chargers bench in order to keep the players away from the heat. Chaffey is a high offensive team and is 3-0-1 when scoring 3 goals or more.
Santos scores 2 goals effort
for the Chargers

Four minutes into the game, Goalkeeper Dennis Bronson mistakenly clears the ball straight up the middle which is intercepted by Chaffey forward Larry Llamas who boots it back to the right side of the goal and finds the net. Llamas who leads the game in shots on goals, finds thenet again at the 26-minute mark, assisted by Carlos Ramos to put Chaffey in the lead of 2-0. Cypress' forward Pedro Romero-Nieva-Santos responds at the 12-minute mark with one of his own boot to cut Chaffey's lead to 2-1. However the Chargers offense seems not to be able click during the second half and Chaffey's Edgar Llamas finds an insurance goal at the 81-minute mark to put Chaffey up 3-1. The Chargers refuse to roll over as Santos was knocked down inside the penalty box at the 89-minute and is awarded a penalty kick. Santos converts and the Charger cut the lead to 3-2 but the referee calls off the game shortly after. Chaffey is still consistent with its goal production and remains undefeated when scoring 3 or more goals.

Cypress suffers its first loss of the season and will host Southwestern next Tuesday.

Chargers tie Moorpark and still unbeaten

Lasse Horn passes a Morrpark defender
Cypress, CA - The Chargers are the third OEC team that Moorpark faces. Moorpark did not score against Santa Ana nor Irvine, but they did not score either. Coming into Cypress with a 0-0-2 record a 0 GA and 0 GF, Moorpark certainly shows strength on defense. Indeed its defense comes through once again, not allowing the Chargers to find the net all afternoon. The Raiders find another 0-0 tie with an OEC foe. Cypress outshoots Moorpark 8-1 in goal shots, led by Lasse Horn who has 4 SOG's. Goalkeeper Dennis Bronson saves 6 shots to propel a tie and keep the Chargers unbeaten for the season at 3-0-2.

Berkley's 2-goal propel Chargers over Vaqueros 5-1

Berkley scores first two goals
for the Chargers
Cypress, CA - Cypress (2-0) Men's Soccer team finds the scoring groove in a 5-1 win over Glendale. The Chargers and Glendale (0-2) College battle to a scoreless first half. It is apparent that the Vaqueros show no sign of what happened at Irvine Valley on Tuesday when the Lasers beat Glendale 4-1. In the 49th minute, Glendale's Christian Lopez power-kicks from 30-year out to put the Vaqueros up 1-0.  This is when the Chargers shift gears, Chris Berkley finds the net at the 57th minute and again at the 61st minute from Lasse Horn corner kick assist to get up 2-1. The Chargers offense continue to attack with Daniel Solis' rebound shot at the 66th minute. On the 70th minute, Lasse Horn floats a corner kick up the middle and Glendale's own man puts it in the net. Horn is credited with the goal. Then at the 75th minute, Brett MacKay goes up the middle for e 35-yarder power shot and his ball finds its way to the lower left corner of the goal.
